Formed in 1917, the division quickly gained the nickname "Blue and Gray", reflecting on the fact
that it comprised soldiers from states on both sides of the American Civil War. Deployed to France
as a part of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, the division saw intense combat
in the final days of the war, and suffered heavy casualties. At the end of the war, it demobilized,
though remained an active National Guard unit.

World War II

At the outbreak of World War II, the United States Army began buildup and reorganization of its
fighting forces. The division was reactivated into active service in February 3, 1941.[4] Elements
of the division were then sent to Fort Meade, Maryland for training.[5] The 57th and 58th Brigades
were deactivated as part of an army-wide removal of Brigades from divisions.[7] Instead, the
division was based around three infantry regiments; the 115th Infantry Regiment, the 116th
Infantry Regiment, and the 175th Infantry Regiment.[8] Also assigned to the division were the
110th, 111th, 224th, and 227th Field Artillery Battalions, as well as the 29th Signal Company,
the 729th Ordnance Company, the 29th Quartermaster Company, the 29th Reconnaissance Troop, the
121st Engineer Battalion, the 104th Medical Battalion, and the 29th Counter Intelligence Detachment.
On March 12, 1942, this reorganization was complete, and the division then began preparing for
deployment to Europe.[6]

The division was sent to England on October 5, 1942.[4] It was based throughout England and
Scotland, where it immediately began training for an invasion of northern Europe across the
English Channel. In May 1943 the division moved to the Devon-Cornwall peninsula and started
conducting simulated attacks against fortified positions.[5] At this time it was assigned to
V Corps of the First United States Army

The 31st Infantry Division was a unit of the Army National Guard in World War I and World War II.
It was originally activated as the 10th, a division established in early 1917 consisting of
Alabama, Florida, and Georgia national guardsmen. By the end of that same year, the 10th Division
became the 31st.

World War II
Activated: 25 November 1940 (National Guard Division from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and
Mississippi).
Overseas: 12 March 1944.
Campaigns: New Guinea, Southern Philippines.
Distinguished Unit Citations: 1.
Commanders: Maj. Gen. John C. Persons (25 November 1940-September 1944), Maj. Gen. Clarence A. Martin (September 1944 to inactivation).
Returned to U.S.: 12 December 1945.
Inactivated: 21 December 1945. (See National Guard.)

The 31st Infantry Division was organized at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, in October of 1917. Almost
from the beginning, it was known as the Dixie Division, a fitting name for a unit whose regiments
and artillery came from Alabama and other "Deep South" States. During World War I the 31st Division
became a replacement Division, and most of its personnel were thrown in the front lines of the
American Expeditionary Forces. The 31st Division returned to the United States in December of 1919
for demobilization. In 1923 the 31st Division was reorganized as a National Guard Division, with
component units located in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
For participation in World War II, the 31st Dixie Division was federalized on 25 November 1940,
and later saw action in the Pacific Theater, half a world away from earlier World War I
experiences. Various units of the Division participated in the landing on New Guinea and Morotai,
and earned commendations for their participation in the campaigns in the Western Pacific, on New
Guinea (with arrowhead) and throughout the Southern Philippines. Here it was presented the
Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. After cessation of hostilities in the Pacific, the Dixie
Division sailed for home. It was deactivated on December 21, 1945.

Pre-World War II

In the period between the World Wars, the 32nd Division was largely a paper unit. During 1937 and
1938, the 107th Engineer Battalion trained at Camp Grayling in Michigan, with emphasis on boat
drills and float bridging. The Regiment was short of men, had no vehicles, and what equipment it
had was of World War I vintage.[16]

Its training left much to be desired, rarely leaving the local drill hall. Only the fall of France
in June 1940 injected some urgency into their training operations, and on 27 August 1940, Congress
authorized inducting the National Guard into Federal service. Eighteen National Guard divisions
were activated, including the 32nd.[17] On 16 September 1940 Congress authorized the first
peacetime draft in United States history. Draftees were inducted for only one year, but on 7
August 1941, by a margin of a single vote, Congress approved an indefinite extension of service
for the Guard, draftees, and Reserve officers.[17]

On 15 October 1940 the Division was activated and the units began a six-day motor march to Camp
Beauregard. The unit then spent the next 16 months training in Louisiana, starting at Camp
Beauregard

When the unit was called to active duty on 15 October 1940, the division was made up of National
Guard units from Michigan and Wisconsin. It was scheduled to receive a year of training.[16] It
was authorized to have a peace-time strength of about 11,600 soldiers, but like almost all units
in the National Guard and the Regular Army prior to World War II, was not at full strength nor
was it assigned all of the equipment it was authorized. Training for many soldiers was incomplete.
On 26 January 1941, the 32nd Division was moved to the recently completed Camp Livingston, about
15 miles (24 km) miles northeast of Alexandria, Louisiana.[16]

During the summer of 1941, the Division took part in the Third and Fourth Army maneuvers-nicknamed
the Louisiana Maneuvers-which provided the army high command a good look at the preparedness of
the regiment. The first test, which was held in the vicinity of Camp Beauregard, was conducted
16 June-27 and included the 32nd Division as well as the 37th Division from Ohio. From
16 August-30, the maneuvers expanded to include the 34th and 38th Divisions. During September,
the largest maneuvers were held with the Seventh Corps of the Second Army, opposing the Fourth,
Fifth, and Eighth Corps of the Third Army. The Grand Rapids Guard was part of the Fifth Corps. It
was the largest maneuver of its kind in the history of the Army and included some 100,000 men.

During January and February 1942, the Division lost one of its infantry regiments when, like all
U.S. Army divisions, its "square" infantry division structure was reorganized into a triangular
organization, centered on three instead of four infantry regiments. It was left with the 126th
Infantry Regiment, 127th Infantry Regiment, and the 128th Infantry Regiment. The three existing
artillery regiments (120th, 121st and 126th) were converted into four separate battalions (120th,
121st, 126th and 129th), and supporting units.[18] In early February 1942 it received a new
commander, Major General Edwin F. Harding

111th Engineer (Combat) Battalion Texas National Guard

36th Infantry Division
The "Texas" Division

The 36th Infantry Division was organized at Camp Bowie (Fort Worth), Texas, 18 July 1917, from
units of the Texas and Oklahoma National Guard during World War I. The Division left Newport News,
Virginia, in July and August of 1918, for France. The 71st Brigade of the Division saw combat at
St. Etiennes-Arnes and on 10 October 1918, the entire division relieved the 2nd Infantry Division
and pushed the Germans to the Aisne River.
When the war was over, the Division saw occupation duty, then returned to Camp Bowie and were
released from active duty on 20 June 1919. By that time, the Division had adopted a shoulder
patch consisting of an Infantry Blue Arrowhead with a green "T" superimposed over it. The
arrowhead stood for Oklahoma and the "T," for Texas. After the war, the 36th was reorganized
and became an "all Texas" division, and the Oklahoma units became part of the 45th Infantry
Division.
Between World Wars I and II, the Division conducted drills at home stations and annual training
periods at Camp Hulen at Palacios, Texas.
On 25 November 1940, the Division was mobilized for World War II, with active duty station at
Camp Bowie, in Brownwood. It took part in the Louisiana Maneuvers in 1941, trained at Camp
Blanding, Florida, and Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, and in April 1943 began its move overseas.
It landed in North Africa, conducted amphibious training and on 9 September 1943, landed in
Italy at Paestum in the Gulf of Salerno. The 36th was the first American combat division to
land on the continent of Europe.

К.И. - The Louisiana Maneuvers were a series of military exercises held all over North Louisiana,
including Fort Polk, Camp Claiborne and Camp Livingston, in August and September 1941. The
exercise was designed to test US troop training, logistics, doctrine, and commanders.
