57th Artillery Battalion, (105mm, Trk Drawn)
( 57th FA Bn 105mm How, Trk-D 1 Jun 41 )
13th Engineer Battalion, (Combat)

World War II
On July 1, 1940, the division was reactivated at Camp Ord, California,[2] under the command of
Major General Joseph W. Stilwell.[4] The 12th and 13th Brigades did not reactivate as part of an
army-wide elimination of brigade commands within its divisions. The division was instead centered
around three infantry regiments; the 17th Infantry Regiment,[8] the 32nd Infantry Regiment,[8] and
the 53rd Infantry Regiment.[4] Also assigned to the division were the 31st, 48th, 49th and 57th
Field Artillery Battalions, as well as the 7th Signal Company, the 707th Ordnance Company, the
7th Quartermaster Company, the 7th Reconnaissance Troop, the 13th Engineer Battalion, the 7th
Medical Battalion, and the 7th Counter Intelligence Detachment.[8] Most of the troops in the
division were selective service soldiers, chosen as a part of the US Army's first peacetime
military draft.[4]

The 7th Infantry Division was assigned to III Corps of the Fourth United States Army,[4] and that
year it was sent to Oregon for tactical maneuvers. Division units also practiced boat loading at
the Monterey Wharf and amphibious assault techniques at the Salinas River in California.[4] With
the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor, the division was sent to Camp San Luis Obispo to continue
its training as a combat division.[4] The 53rd Infantry Regiment was removed from the 7th Division
and replaced with the 159th Infantry Regiment, newly deployed from the California Army National
Guard.[4] For the early parts of the war, the division participated mainly in construction and
training roles. On April 9, 1942, the division was formally redesignated as the 7th Motorized
Division.[2] It began training in the Mojave Desert in preparation for deployment to the African
theater.[4] However, it was again designated the 7th Infantry Division on January 1, 1943,[2]
when the motorized equipment was removed from the unit and it became a light infantry division
once more. It began rigorous amphibious assault training under US Marines from the Fleet Marine
Force, before being deployed to fight in the Pacific theater instead of Africa.[4] General Holland
Smith oversaw the unit's training.[9]

Aleutian Islands
Elements of the 7th Infantry Division first saw combat in the amphibious assault on Attu Island,
the western-most Japanese entrenchment in the Aleutian islands chain. Elements landed on May 11,
1943,[10] spearheaded by the 17th Infantry Regiment, and fought an intense battle over the tundra
against strong Japanese resistance.[6] The fight for the island culminated in a battle at
Chichagof Harbor, when the division destroyed all Japanese resistance on the island[6] on May 29,
after a suicidal Japanese bayonet charge.[11] During its first fight of the war, 600 soldiers of
the division were killed, while killing 2,351 Japanese and taking 28 prisoners.[11] After American
forces secured the island chain, the 159th Infantry Regiment was ordered to stay on the island,
and the 184th Infantry Regiment took its place as the 7th Division's third infantry regiment. The
184th Infantry would remain with the division until the end of the war.[4] The 159th Infantry
Regiment would stay on the island for some time longer until returning to the United States, where
it would remain until the end of the war.

American forces then began preparing to move against nearby Kiska island, termed Operation
Cottage, the final fight in the Aleutian islands campaign.[11] In August 1943, elements of the
7th Infantry Division took part in an amphibious assault on Kiska with a brigade from the 6th
Canadian Infantry Division, only to find the island deserted by the Japanese.[6] It was later
discovered that the Japanese had withdrawn their 5,000-soldier garrison during the night of
July 28, under cover of fog.[11]

This division was named rather than numbered, as were the Philippine, Panama Canal and Americal
Divisions. It was first activated under the peacetime Square Division Table of Organization and
Equipment (TO&E) on 25 February 1921 as the Hawaiian Division using assets of the World War I era
11th Infantry Division. It, the Philippine Division, and the Americal Division were the last
three U.S. Army divisions to be named rather than numbered. The division retained this TO&E until
1941, when it was reorganized under a triangular division TO&E, and part of its former
organization became the core of the new 24th Infantry Division & 25th Infantry Division.

[edit] World War II
The 24th & 25th Infantry Divisions were among the first to see combat in World War II and among
the last to stop fighting. The Divisions were on Oahu, with Headquarters at Schofield Barracks,
when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941, and suffered minor casualties. Charged
with the defense of Oahu and the Hawaiian Islands, they built an elaborate system of coastal
defenses before deploying for further combat operations.

[edit] Inactivation
The Hawaiian Division inactivated in October 1941 to provide cadre & units for the 24th & 25th
Infantry Divisions. These were triangular divisions with regiments of the Hawaiian National Guard
providing the 3rd regiment of each division. The 299th Regiment went to the 24th & the 298th
Regiment went to the 25th Infantry Division.

The Hawaiian Division, activated in 1921, was organized under a square structure of the World
War I divisions. In 1941 its major units consisted of the 21st Infantry Brigade, comprised of
the 19th and 21st Infantry Regiments; the 22nd Infantry Brigade comprised of the 27th and 35th
Infantry Regiments; and the 11th Field Artillery Brigade, comprised of the 8th, 11th, and 13th
Field Artillery Regiments. (Elements of all seven of these regiments would eventually serve with
the 25th Division).

In 1940 as war threatened, the Army concluded that the square division was too cumbersome for
modern warfare and adopted a new triangular division design of three infantry regiments, four
field artillery battalions plus support troops. At Schofield Barracks on 1 October 1941 the Army
activated two triangular divisions, designated the 24th and 25th Infantry Divisions, using the
units of the Hawaiian Division.

The 19th and 21st Infantry Regiments and the 11th and 13th Field Artillery were assigned to the
24th Division. The 27th and 35th Infantry Regiments and the 8th Field Artillery were assigned
to the 25th Division. The Hawaiian Division's support units composed primarily of the 3rd
Engineer Regiment, the 11th Quartermaster Regiment and the 11th Medical Regiment were reorganized
and redesignated as separate battalions and assigned to the two new divisions.

To provide the third infantry regiment the 25th was assigned the 298th Infantry Regiment of
the Hawaiian National Guard called to federal service in 1940. The first Commanding General
of the 25th Infantry Division was Major General Maxwell Murray who as a Brigadier General
commanded the 11th Field Artillery Brigade of the Hawaiian Division.

In 1921 the Army organized the Hawaiian Division, consisting of two brigades of two infantry
regiments, three field artillery regiments, an engineer regiment, a tank company, and assorted
support troops. The division consisted of 13,000 men, with a requirement for expansion to 20,000
during wartime.

26th Infantry Division Massachusetts National Guard

на 7 дек 41 -
26th Infantry Division Massachusetts National Guard - Camp Edwards, Falmouth Massachusetts

The 26th Infantry Division was an infantry division of the United States Army. As a major
formation of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, it was based in Boston, Massachusetts
for most of its history. Today, the division's heritage is carried on by the 26th Maneuver
Enhancement Brigade.

Formed in 1917 consisting of units from the New England area, the division's commander selected
the nickname "Yankee Division" to highlight the division's geographic makeup

In January 1941, the 26th Infantry Division, which was recently federalized, consisted entirely
of Massachusetts National Guard members.[1] Over the next 3 months, its ranks filled up with
members from New York and New England.[1] Starting for 7 months in April 1941, the 26th Infantry
Division left Camp Edwards to participate in the Carolina Maneuvers and the Coastal Patrol, while
other National Guard and Army Divisions came to train the camp.[1] The 26th returned to Camp
Edwards on December 6, 1941, with the expectation of completing their year of service soon.[1]
The bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the subsequent declaration of war by the
United States, resulted in extension of federal service for the division through 1945.

101st Infantry Regiment info:
With the German steamroller crashing throughout Europe in May 1940, America fell the need for
increased defenses against the threat of totalitarian might and started into operation long
prepared plans for the mobilization of a citizen army. All National Guard Divisions were
inducted into Federal Service within a year. And so, on January 16, 1941, the 26th Division,
the "Yankee Division" of World War I was inducted. On that date, the 10,000 Massachusetts
Officers and Men of the Division reported to the 50 Armories throughout the State.
Augmented by 1500 Trainees, the Regiment was engaged in its initial training at Camp Edwards, Mass.
Moving temporarily to Fort Devens, Mass., for preliminary field maneuvers, the Regiment again
returned to Camp Edwards in September 1941, only to leave again to participate in Carolina
Maneuvers during October and November, returning again in December to Camp Edwards.

Active
August 22, 1917-December 21, 1945
April 11, 1947-September 1, 1993

In the years following World War I, the division remained in the National Guard, seeing periodic
reorganizations but no major deployments except for weekend training. In 1921, the 102nd Infantry
Regiment was replaced in the guard by the 182nd Infantry Regiment. In 1923, the 103rd Infantry
Regiment was replaced with the 181st Infantry Regiment.[2] In 1941, the 101st Infantry Regiment
was replaced with the 164th Infantry Regiment briefly; one year later it was relieved from the
division, along with the 182nd Infantry Regiment, in order to form the Americal Division

Major General Willard S. Paul took command of the division, which he would lead through the rest
of the war.

27th Infantry Division New York National Guard

27th Division
World War Two
History
Pre WWII Service:
In 1912 the New York State National Guard was organized into a divisional format, which meant that
groups of its regiments would be placed together under a larger organized unit, in a manner similar
to that of the regular army. This new division would eventually become the 27th Infantry Division.
On June 16th, 1916 the New York State National Guard Division was mobilized and moved to the
Mexican border to participate in Brigadier General John Pershing's sortie into Mexico. The
division, known initially as the New York Division and then as the 6th Division remained in
Mexico until March of 1917 when it was recalled to New York in preparation for possible service
in Europe. In late April of 1918, the division was transported to Europe where it fought gallantly
for the remainder of World War I.
WWII Service:
The 27th Infantry Division was federalized for service on October 15th, 1940 and initially
commanded by Major General William Haskell. At this time it still retained its WWI organization
of two brigades and four regiments. The 53rd Brigade consisted of the 105th and 106th Infantry
regiments while the 54th Brigade contained the 108th and 165th Infantry regiments. Following a
lengthy period of maneuvers and training, the 27th was ordered to California in December following
the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. While in California the 27th awaited orders to ship out and
concentrated on bringing itself up to the authorized field strength of 1,012 officers and 21,314
enlisted men. The division's strength had been reduced by discharges to around 14,000 men. The
first elements of the division boarded ships bound for Hawaii on February 27th 1942, the first
Infantry Division to leave the states following Pearl Harbor.
The division remained on Hawaii for a number of months, during which time it was triangularized,
with the 108th Infantry regiment being reassigned to the 40th Division. A division that has been
triangularized has been given three infantry regiments instead of the four of a square division.
This final reorganization dismantled the brigade structure and again dropped the division's
strength to 14,000 men. Following the reorganization, the 27th Division was shifted to Oahu, where
it would relieve the 25th Infantry Division, which was slated to join the U.S forces fighting in
Guadalcanal. For most of its time in Hawaii, the 27th was under the command of Brigadier General
Ralph Pennel.
On November 20th 1942, the 27th Infantry Division embarked on its first combat assignment,
the capture of the coral atoll of Makin. The 27th also had a new division commander, Major General
Ralph Smith. Units from the 27th Division also occupied the Majuro atoll on February 1st 1944 and
successfully assaulted Eniwetok Island on February 19th of the same year. In June 1944, the
division landed on Saipan, where its regiments fought together for the first time as a full
division. Following Saipan the division was rested and reinforced at Espirto Santo for seven
months before any further operations. During this time the 27th received its final division
commander, Major General George Griner Jr * . On April 12th, 1945 the division landed on Okinawa,
where it would remain until September when it was sent to Japan briefly for garrison duty. The
division was mustered out in late December of the same year. Since its arrival in the Pacific,
the 27th Infantry Division had suffered 1,512 killed in action, 4,980 wounded in action and 332
who later succumbed to their wounds.
General Smith had been removed from command following a dispute with the aggressive and eccentric
Marine commander, General Holland "Howling Mad" Smith who had been in overall command of the
Saipan invasion. Holland Smith claimed that Ralph Smith had disregarded orders and mishandled
the 27th Division, prompting the relief order. Later court of inquiry showed that the charges
were for the most part unsubstantiated and General Ralph Smith was quickly given a new command.

28th Infantry Division Pennsylvania National Guard

The 28th Infantry Division is a unit of the Army National Guard and is the oldest division-sized
unit in the armed forces of the United States.[1][2] The division was officially established in
1879 and was later redesignated as the 28th Division in 1917, after the entry of America into the
First World War. See World War I. It continues its service today as part of the Pennsylvania Army
National Guard.

The 28th's preparation reached further back than unloading ships on a beachhead. In February,
1941, when war clouds hung heavy over the world, Pennsylvania National Guard units assembled at
Indiantown Gap to consolidate into an infantry division. Training in 1942 and 1943 was thorough
and rigid.

Basic exercises gave way to tactical maneuvers. To acquaint itself with all the tactics adaptable
to modern warfare, the division trained in many states-the Carolinas, Virginia, Louisiana, Texas,
Florida. Basic principles of fire and movement developed into highly-specialized big-scale
operations: shore-to-shore, ship-to-shore, mountain, general assault training.
